Exclusive interview with developers of Orc Attack

"Orc Attack" is a game in the vein of Castle Crashers, which lets up to 4 players take the role of a band of gassy Orcs and beat their way through over 20 levels of human bashing goodness. I've had a talk with Igor Rodinski from "Casual Brothers", developers of this upcoming beat- and fart-em-up Orc Attack, which is looking to satisfy all your filthy human killing needs.

Here's a gameplay demo showing the game in action:

Now on to the interview.

Q: Firstly I’d like to ask you to give us a short introduction to Orc Attack. What’s the essence of the game?

A: The essence is, above all, fun, both alone or even better, with your friends.
The story has its fair share of protest against the destruction of the environment. The Orcs use to live wild and free in their homeland, until the humans arrive with their evil machines to exploit the natural resources to the exhaustion, bringing pollution to the land, water and air, and making the Orcs fell terribly sick, suffering severe gastric disorders that will result in extreme flatulence.

Q: The beat-em-up genre has had somewhat of a revival in recent years, especially after the release of Castle Crashers. Can you tell us a little about what your inspiration for Orc Attack has been and how Orc Attack stands out from other beat-em-ups?

A: We can’t deny we love Castle Crashers and that we found some inspiration in it. In fact, we were pretending to catch the spirit of 2D beat’em up classics, bringing them to 3D, something that no one done before, and we think we succeeded thanks to our innovative camera, for Orc Attack stands out from others beat-em ups firstly for been in 3D and for its innovative camera, focusing the action with all four players always on screen sharing the same view.
Secondly, the mass combat allow up to 50 enemies on screen, so the battles looks really spectacular. Of course, there is the difference that in this game you play Orcs against evil human, and, naturally, the use of gases, as farts and burps, to fight the enemies producing explosions and other deadly effects, is also a stand up.

Q: One of the features of Orc Attack is being able to buy new gear for your characters. Can you explain how the new gear will affect the game experience?

A: The characters experience will evolve and increase as much as you play, and as much experience you have, you can upgrade your character to be more resistant, more strength, fast, etc, and also you can buy different items by recollecting coins. These items will highly affect the character performance in combat.

Orcs. Attacking stuff.

Q: We all know that Orcs are filthy creatures and in Orc Attack they even suffer from extreme flatulence to boot. You have a whole game mode called “Dirty Mode” that focuses on different kinds of... gas related abilities. Can you tell us a bit about Dirty Mode and how that mixes up the gameplay?

A: At the beginning, the Orcs, suffering extreme flatulence, can’t even control their gases, so they fart unwittingly when their gas reach his high, with no harm to the enemy.
Later on, as they gain experience, they began to control their gases, and make it more and more harmful and lethal to the enemy, turning their gas problem into a mass destruction weapon, learning to combine farts and burps of different effect to produce spectacular explosions, or effective gas barriers, or healing clouds. This is, in essence, the Dirty Mode.

Q: Like a lot of games these days there will be a lot of focus on co-op multiplayer in Orc Attack it seems. How does playing Orc Attack with friends change the experience from playing the game on your own?

A: Single player will include a “bot pal”, so you will always play with a companion. Of course, if your play with friends, local or online, will be funnier, not only to make coop combos or gas attacks, but also to, at the same time, been the one who got more kills, hits, coins and points in each level or combat mission.
The coop include a lot of features, as to carry a buddy on your shoulders, to fight big enemies, to reach high places or to cross some narrow pass, as the howler attack, with two or more Orcs making a synchronized jump and fall to clear the way from enemies, or to break, sink or run down something, and a lot of fart-burp combinations.

Q: Any other comments about Orc Attack that you’d like to add?

A: Finally, I would like to say that Orc Attack is a game made by players and for players, you know. I mean exactly what I’ve said.

Q: Is there a date for when we will get to try out the life of a farting Orc?

A: Orc Attack is expected to be on release for PSN, XBLA, OnLive and PC digital in 4Q 2012.

Thanks a lot, Igor!
