Playing the auction house is a nice way to earn piles of shiny gold without stooping to such lows as actually killing monsters or looting chests.
It's also a nice way to completely piss away all your hard earned virtual yellows if you don't know what you are doing.
There are thousands of AH sharks out there that are all seeing to continue growing their wealth by snapping up every good deal they see, so it takes more than a casual interest if you want to really make the big score on the AH.
Flipping items on the Diablo 3 AH require a bit of finesse.. |
However, what if you don't need to make those multi-million gold wins that the big fish are all going for?
What if you are happy making 10-50.000 gold per deal and prefer not to risk the money you've already worked hard to accumulate?
Well, in that case there are several niches on the AH that will allow you to score a small profit without very much risk on your part.
For all three of these methods the thing to keep in mind is that everyone loves a free lunch.
The reason that these methods of earning money are almost risk free is because they have a very steady market price and high market demand.
Therefore there are a lot of people that compete for these same items, so don't expect to just walk through piles of easy gold ready to be picked up.
Basically you are getting low risk for your investment but will also have to contend with a market that's also full of other bargain hunters.
1) Buy level 60 legendary weapons and armor and 59 legendary jewelry at prices below the price of Fiery Brimstone
Fiery Brimstones are needed to craft legendary items, which means they are a fairly valuable commodity.
You are guaranteed a Fiery Brimstone whenever you salvage a level 60 legendary or a legendary level 59 jewelry (level requirements, not item level).
Because not every is aware of this, or simply don't check the price of Fiery Brimstones before creating their auction, you'll regularly see legendaries being posted at a price that is lower than the price of the brimstones.
Making money on this fact is as easy as entering in 60 as the lowest item requirement in the AH search, setting the filter to show only legendary items and then searching for weapons, armor and off hand items that are being sold at a price that is lower than the price of a Fiery Brimstone.
Remember that the AH takes a cut of 15% from your revenue, so you'll need to take this into account when looking at the sales price of the legendary item.
This method can also be applied to any level 60 item and Exquisite Essences, searching for items that are put up on the AH with a lower buyout price than the price of an Exquisite Essence.
2) Flip 25% Gold Find items
Everybody likes gold, so surely everybody just *loves* items that increase the amount of gold that you find, right?
Right you are, good sir. The market for armor pieces and shields with the maximum Gold Find affix (25%) is a market with a lot of trading and pretty stable prices (as stable as prices get in an economy as volatile as Diablo 3).
Flipping (buying low and selling high) 25% gold find items is pretty easy and therefore a good place to start for a person without much experience in the way of speculating in the AH.
You only need to search for a single stat and you don't need to worry about what effect the other stats have on the item price (of course a gold find item with good stats will be worth more than an item with low stats, but the 25% gold find has an inherent value of its own).
You should search for all of the following items: Shields, Belt, Pants, Bracers, Chest, Gloves and Shoulders.
Only worry about the very cheapest the items. Is it more than 20-50k below the next in line (again, remember to consider the 15% cut from the AH) then it's a good opportunity to snap it up and repost it the same price as the second cheapest one.
Since the market has good steady demand for these items you will usually see a sale quite quickly, earning you some easy cash.
You can also apply this method to Magic Find gear (the max affix for the above mentioned items is 20% for magic find).
Looking at this picture it seems that the price of 25% gold find boots is around 200k. You could probably flip those 150k ones for 195K and make 15k after the AH cut |
3) Check the crafting recipes for bargains
Crafting recipes are part of the commodity market on the AH and thus comes with a handy indicator showing you the price of the last 10 trades.
This is the default suggested sales price when someone puts up a recipe for sale, but sometimes the seller will choose a lower price than suggested. Sometimes a lot lower.
Running through the list of different crafting recipes (you can probably skip the legendary ones unless you're carrying a bunch of cash) you may stumble on some recipes that are up for grabs for much lower than the average sales price of the last 10 units.
This is often a good chance to make a quick flip and pocket a little cash, though it must be said that this method is a little more risky than the previous two suggestions since the market for most recipes is nowhere near as stable as the market for FB's or gold find gear.
These tricks will probably not make you a multi-million gold millionaire any time soon, but they're a nice way of adding a little extra cash to your pile if you have some spare time and free AH slots that you are not using.
Happy trading!
